The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama

The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama is a higher education conservatoire – a specialist college nurturing creative collaboration, standing at the forefront of training and research in the dramatic arts.

Founded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1906 the School moved in 1957 to the Embassy Theatre and its associated buildings at Swiss Cottage. Today Central is a college of the University of London. It has subsumed the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, and was awarded Royal Title in 2012. It has also been declared, by HEFCE, as the Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre, and has achieved the highest rating in its sector for Research work described as ‘world leading in practice as research’.

Courses include acting, applied theatre, movement directing, musical theatre, drama and movement therapy, theatre and live performance, puppetry, scenography, actor training and coaching, voice, technical arts and production, and writing for stage and broadcast media, as well as short courses and business training. With over 60 academic staff, together with visiting artists, directors and lecturers, Central has the largest grouping of drama/theatre/performance specialists in the UK and is a hub for the theatre and performance industries. Alumni include Laurence Olivier, Harold Pinter, Cameron Mackintosh, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael Grandage, Carrie Fisher, Cicely Berry and Judi Dench.
